Kanha
National Park:
This
is the most famous national park of the State, perhaps of India.
The park encompasses nearly 940 sq km of pristine sal forest interspersed
with grasslands created by the relocation of 26 tribal villages
in the seventies and eighties. The main attractions of the park,
apart from the enchanting scenery are the tigers, leopards, spotted
deer, sambar deer, gaur and swamp deer (barasingha). The park
hosts the only surviving population of nearly 300 hard-ground
barasingha in the world. The region is inhabited by the gond and
baiga tribes, a glimpse into their cultural life can further enrich
the experience of the visitor.
