Madhya Pradesh is well endowed with a rich gamut of picturesque and relatively undisturbed landscapes, forests, wildlife and cultural diversity. The State has the largest forest area (94,669 sq km) in the country of which more than 10,000 sq km is under Protected Areas, under National Parks and Sanctuaries. It is also home to several rare, endangered and threatened species. More than 80 percent of tourism in Madhya Pradesh is centered on nature and wildlife.
It is in this context that "Ecotourism" has gained its bearing in Madhya Pradesh. Ecotourism or ecologically sustainable tourism has been defined as responsible tourism to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well being of local communities. Ecotourism also had potential to play an important role in creating environmental as well as cultural awareness amongst all the stakeholders- local communities, tourists, government and the private sector.
Ecotourism offers a wide array of natural wealth and eco products like nature trails, safaris, adventure sports, camping, bird watching etc. The extravagant green stretch from carpet to canopy in the state of Madhya Pradesh is the bedrock of ecotourism. The music of wilderness with chirping of birds, calls of the wild, rustling of leaves, the dew drops shining on spider webs, the wet grass on the forest floor, the termite mounds and above all, the paramount industry of water- the standing forest blocks are the benevolent patrons to the intensification of ecotourism efforts in Madhya Pradesh.
